Hamstring Strains

What is it?

A muscle strain is the result of an injury which damages the muscle or attaching tendon. Typically the injury is the result of excess stress/stretching placed on the muscle during lifting, sport, or even everyday activity.

Muscles strains are classified into three categories:

• First degree—overstretching/microtearing, no gross fiber disruption

• Second degree—partial tearing of muscle or tendon

• Third degree— complete muscle or tendon rupture

Signs and symptoms

• Pain, especially with activity, and tenderness

• Swelling and redness

• Weakness or inability to use the muscle

What is the Proper Treatment for a Muscle Strain?

Initially, rest, ice, elevation, and compression (RICE) is the best protocol for a muscle strain. You may want to take an anti-inflammatory medication to help reduce pain and inflammation. Additionally, protecting the muscle from further injury is important. Once the initial phase of treatment is finished (typically 24—48 hours) further rehabilitation can begin with your athletic trainer or other health care provider. This includes stretching and strengthening of the injured muscle and surrounding muscle.
